This month’s verse:
James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Let me tell you a true story about a woman in Tennessee who owns donkeys and horses. One evening she heard that her donkeys were braying and screaming wildly in the pasture outside her house. She opened the window and saw them running around wildly back-and-forth up and down, all around and posted a video of it on social media.
As I was reading the comments as to why donkeys might run around scared like that, I noticed that a few people, who had donkeys, recognised that kind of behaviour as being a fear of snakes or some other predator. When a donkey sees a snake it feels deathly afraid of it, because it doesn’t understand that it has the power to kill it with it’s hooves. That’s why it just runs away in circles in the pasture and screams until it doesn’t see it anymore. It want’s to flee, but the fence makes it even more anxious. So, all it can do is run around in terrified in circles and make tons of noise. Sad!
When a horse, however, sees a snake, it gets scared momentarily but it will stand up on its hind legs and trample the snake multiple times until it is completely dead. Why? Because it understands its power.
Be a horse not a mule
This got me thinking about you and me and the present situation in our world of constant chaos: how the news daily spits out fear and woe; how the Internet overwhelms us with conflicting bits of information; reports about wars and rumours of wars; and the daily struggles we have in our familiar circles. At times it can seem as though we are surrounded by attacks, worry, fear and unrest on every side. These are “snakes in the grass” that we need to trample with our “hooves”, i.e. by slamming the worry, the fear and the hurt to death with the Word of God.
I was reading in Psalm 91 this morning and in verses 13-14 it says:
"You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him. I will protect him for he acknowledges my name”.
I'd like to challenge you today to read all of Psalm 91, meditate on it and memorise it. My husband and I have, and it has been very useful in trampling the “snakes” that show up in our “pasture”.
Jesus reiterates this mindset in Luke 10:19:
“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
You and I need to read the context of these and other verses about our authority and protection in Christ to gain a full understanding of how we address the snakes in our lives and come out victorious. (Galatians chapter 6 is great - the armour). But it is through meditating on them, and using them when "the snakes show up", that we can crush the snakes instead of running helplessly around and maybe even get bitten on the leg.
Head knowledge only goes so far.
When the attacks come, you need to have your hooves ready. You need to stand your ground and let the power verses fly at the enemy.
Tempted to feel depressed? Sling a verse like 2 Timothy 1:7 at the “snake”. “God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power and of love, and of a sound mind.” (King James Version)
You and I don't have to be running around like scared, helpless donkeys in this chaotic pasture called life. We don't have to be afraid just because everybody else is concentrating on the "snakes in the grass”, running around wildly and afraid. No, we can be at perfect peace, even in the midst of trouble, when our minds are focused on God, when we are rooted in His words and under the protection and and authority we have in Christ.
Book News:
I'm working on chapter four of twelve, Those Eyes - about the breakthrough that happened to me when I was at a major Christian conference, finally met the Lord face to face and got back into my music calling, (that I had ignored and thought was dead for decades). I look back in awe on how God moves and the wisdom He has! Please keep me in prayer as I write the Change My Mind book! ❤️ Thanks! ❤️
Music News:
I’ve been concentrating on creating a live repertoire/set list in order to do future concerts in Sweden and abroad, and will continue editing/finalising the song I'm Allowed to Be Myself this month.
